          Introduction to Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is native to Western Europe and North Africa, and is now cultivated in China in Shaanxi, Gansu, Heilongjiang and Hebei provinces. Contains flavonoids, and a large amount of silybin and silymarin, with liver cell recovery function. It also has the effect of clearing away heat and detoxification, dredging liver and benefiting gallbladder, and is often used for dampness and heat of liver and gallbladder, hypochondriac pain and jaundice.

          The function of milk thistle

          1. Clearing away heat and detoxification
Milk thistle has the effect of clearing away heat and detoxifying. The whole herb is used for abscesses, erysipelas, liver and gallbladder damp-heat, hypochondriac pain, jaundice and other symptoms. Silybum marianum seeds contain an active ingredient called silymarin, which is a powerful antioxidant. It helps the liver to remove toxins and has the effect of repairing damaged liver cells.
          2. Liver protection
Silymarin is the main active ingredient for liver protection. It has a regenerative effect, which can stimulate the formation of new liver cells and improve liver function. It also has a protective effect on liver cell membranes, prevents cytotoxins from infiltrating liver cells, and improves the recovery ability of membrane structure defects.
          3. Antioxidant
The phenolic hydroxyl group of silymarin provides hydrogen atoms and has a powerful antioxidant effect. They have free radical scavenging properties and anti-lipid peroxidation activity.
          4. Lowering blood lipids
Silybin can inhibit food-induced hypercholesterolemia and can be used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

          Nutritional value of milk thistle

          1. Silymarin has the functions of protecting liver, lowering blood lipid, anti-oxidation, preventing diabetes, protecting myocardium, anti-platelet aggregation and anti-tumor.
          2. The mechanism of silymarin's hepatoprotective effect can be attributed to its protective effect on liver cell membrane, promotion of liver cell repair and regeneration, and anti-fibrosis effect, which can significantly reduce cholesterol and triglyceride in exogenous hyperlipidemia.
          3. The experiment proved that silybin can reduce the damage of hypoxia and hypoglycemic cardiomyocytes, and can partially counteract the injury of isoproterenol aggravating hypoxia and hypoglycemic cardiomyocytes; In addition, studies have shown that silymarin can significantly reduce the platelet adhesion rate.
